Getting bored of coming across the same old generic WordPress blogs that fail to engage or inspire you as you browse?

Maybe you’re sick of seeing the same regurgitated themes that offer nothing new, giving you the feeling that you’re scrolling down one of those never-ending corridors you see on Scooby Doo.

These do nothing but leave you with the impression of low effort and, therefore, low quality content. Not to mention a bit of a sour taste in your mouth given the time you’ve just wasted.

The simple fact is, WordPress powers over a third of the sites you see on the web. Including this one to be fair, but this was built before I started experimenting with other offerings. Hopefully I’ve done enough to put my own little spin on it!

Do you want to give your own readers that same underwhelming experience?

I hope not!

So how can you create something fresh and inspiring?

This is where Squarespace blogs come in.

It might seem like Squarespace has spent it’s time in the shadows of giants such as WordPress and Weebly over the years. So, what’s so good about blogging on Squarespace?

Squarespace Blogs

In this article I’m going to give you the low-down on why blogging with Squarespace can be advantageous. Not only that, but how to blog on Squarespace.

Let’s get into it!

So, How Is Squarespace Good For Blogging?

Interestingly enough, looking into its history, Squarespace wasn’t originally developed to accommodate for bloggers.

However, I must say they have done a great job over the years. They’ve made constant improvements to increase the functionality and make it a more inviting platform for bloggers.

Bare in mind that, for all intents and purposes, Squarespace was developed as a website builder primarily rather than a CMS. Is that what gives Squarespace a unique selling point for blogs, though?

Let’s look at some of the offerings that I’ve found Squarespace blogs bring to the table in terms of features.

In my opinion, during my recent experiments with Squarespace, these are all features that give the platform a distinct advantage for bloggers.

This is one of the main advantages and unique selling points with regards to blogging on Squarespace. Creating professional-looking, unique pages and designs is a breeze.

Thanks to its drag-and-drop builder, anyone can build engaging and attractive Squarespace blogs with little-to-no knowledge of coding.

It’s very easy to use, you really don’t even need previous site building experience. This makes blogging on Squarespace a great option for non-coders.

All-in-one Solution:

Building a website requires many monotonous tasks to be completed, from taking the baby step of choosing a platform, customising your own designs, producing quality content, to finally making sure everything’s in place for a successful launch.

Squarespace does a great job of putting everything in one place and making the vast array of tools easy to access. This makes the process of building a blog seamless and  stress-free.

From page design, to SEO optimisation, handling domains, list building, and even logo design! Everything can be handled in-house on Squarespace, lending itself to great speed and efficiency.

Squarespace even handles your hosting and domains for you, truly making it an all-inclusive solution.

Templates and Designs

When you compare other builders with Squarespace, you’ll find more generic and uninspiring templates and themes that leave a lot to be desired.

As I’ve mentioned before, Squarespace templates give off a real upper-class feel and you won’t be left feeling like you’ve seen it a million times before.

If you’re looking for something beautiful, inviting, and potentially converting, you won’t need to look any further than the templates on offer for Squarespace blogs.

Don’t Worry About Plug-ins

If you’ve ever used WordPress to build a blog, you’ll know all about the struggles you encounter when it comes to compatibility issues between various concoctions of plugins and themes!

The problem is, your hands are really tied in this situation with WordPress.

To put your own twist on themes and layouts, you’ve no choice but to opt for plugins on offer.

While in fairness, many are great and definitely add to the user experience, others are poorly coded and often lead to compatibility issues with your theme and other plugins.

Plugins become problematic because WordPress is open source and invites a multitude of coders to create plugins, and sometimes they just don’t play well with eachother.

All of us WordPress users know that uncertain feeling of updating your plugins, wondering what’s going to break next!

On the other hand, you’ll have no such issue blogging on Squarespace. All add-ons are controlled and updates made in house.

This means you can relax in the safety that, no matter what, you know any update will be optimised for your site.

Optimisations For Squarespace Blogs

Up to now, I’ve covered general features of the Squarespace builder and platform that outlines it as a great solution for all of your blogging needs, as well as general purpose sites too.

So, what about the dedicated features for blogging on Squarespace? How do they stack up against the other big names in the game?

Focusing specifically on the blogging aspect, let’s take a look at what I’ve found to make Squarespace a great alternative for building your blog.

Improved Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Blogging is a great way to get your name out there and one of the most effective ways to get noticed by search engines.

Squarespace SEO

To be clear here, there’s no advanced SEO strategy built in to the platform that gives it a leg-up on the competition. That’s not what I’m trying to say.

I’ve found, though, that other features of the platform can indirectly give your SEO a boost.

For example, the fact that you can’t install a bunch of third party plugins like you can on other platforms.

How does this help SEO, though?

Your site will always be optimised, there are no plugins causing issues with messy code or adding extra bloat to the site. Your site is always running at top speed, an important ranking factor for Google.

In fact, Squarespace put a big emphasis on using clean code that allows your site to run smoothly and efficiently.

Furthermore, the Squarespace editor makes everything so easy to use, that it just makes you want to use it more! Adding meta descriptions, image alt tags, optimised URL structures, etc. are all incredibly easy to do.

Keep Your Readers Engaged With a Summary Block

Summary blocks are an incredibly efficient feature, and it’s a big hit among those with Squarespace blogs.

A summary block consists of related blog posts similar to the post that the visitor has finished reading.

It’s not groundbreaking stuff, and something that can be done with other platforms.

However, it looks REALLY good!

It makes messing around with related post plugins a thing of the past, no longer will you be looking for something that fits with your theme.

The Squarespace summary block is native, and it just fits so nicely.

Highlight Relevant Information Using the Blog Sidebar

Everybody loves to showcase something special. I like to engage the reader immediately after landing on my page.

Squarespace has you covered with this aspect as well.

Whatever you have to share, whether it’s a short description about yourself, offering a free download, or pointing someone to relevant information – make use of the blog sidebar.

It’s a great tool and it works wonders for engaging readers and keeping them around on your site for longer. A great boost to the user experience.

Once again it’s the nativity of it that helps it reign supreme. While WordPress might offer plugins, or even themes with sidebars, you’ll often find yourself with limitations that leave you unsatisfied.

Overall, I believe that all of the features listed here, plus more, will lead you to have a very pleasant experience blogging on Squarespace.

If anything, you’ll probably find yourself converted and wondering why it took so long.

Potential Pitfalls of Squarespace blogging

It can’t all be sunshine and rainbows, can it?

While I am very impressed with the tools offered to help build Squarespace blogs, let’s not get too over-excited with it.

Here I’ve listed a few of the potential drawbacks you might find to blogging on Squarespace:

Squarespace Pricing

While it does offer a 14-day free trial, Squarespace is exclusively a premium platform.

In fairness, this is to be expected given that it’s an all-in-one platform that even takes care of your domains and hosting.

Details of Squarespace pricing can be found below. For what it’s worth though, I definitely believe it’s worth every penny and more. However, I do understand that you can’t argue with free.

Potentially too Minimalist for Some

For most, especially beginners, Squarespace blogs will be ideal due to the minimalist nature of the builder making it an incredibly smooth and intuitive experience.

That said, to those with more experience and advanced knowledge with site builders, you might find it leaves a bit to be desired.

For example, the builder doesn’t actually offer an autosave feature. I’ve made this mistake a couple of times and it does get frustrating.

My Take on Squarespace Blogs

As you’ve probably come to expect after reading up to this point, I highly recommend Squarespace as a platform to build your blog.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or just looking to start afresh from the same old generic feel given by other platforms, Squarespace is a refreshing option sure to inspire you to blogging glory… or something like that!

Granted, it’s not perfect, and if you’re looking for something with more advanced customisation options, you might want to check out Webflow.

That being said, if you’re a beginner looking to put a fresh new twist on a blog, Squarespace offers an intuitive, hassle-free and easy-to-use builder that makes the blogging process seamless and satisfying.

Not to mention the vast array of templates that give Squarespace blogs an upper-class and professional feel.

How To Blog On Squarespace

So that’s it, I’ve twisted your arm and you’re sold!

Great! One step closer to that blogging glory thing I was talking about, eh?

So how exactly do you use Squarespace to build a blog?

Where do you start?

Well, no worries, I’m still here and I’m going to give you a little demo!

I’ve also picked some of the best templates to improve your blog’s appeal. At the end, you will also find some bonus SEO tips to make your blog stand out for the search engines.

So, let’s jump into how to get started blogging on Squarespace.

Set Up Your Squarespace Blog

Okay, first things first, you’re going to need to sign up for your Squarespace account, you only need the free trial to get started.

I’m not going to walk you through this step because, well, we all know how to sign up for stuff.

You’re going to want to choose a template, and feel free to add pages based on your own needs. We’re just going to focus on the blog.

If you need tips for deciding between Squarespace templates, you’ll find that covered a bit further down in the bonus tips!

1. Create A Blog Page

Once you’re signed up, logged in, and ready to roll, the first thing you need to do is create a blog page. Your website may already have some pages depending on the template you’ve gone for.

You’ll need a dedicated blog page to post all of your blogs on, as Squarespace doesn’t allow you to share your blogs on any other page.

To get started with the blog page, click on the ‘pages’ tab from your main screen.

Setting up Squarespace Blogs

You’ll then want to click the little ‘+’ icon on the main navigation panel.

Setting up Blogs on Squarespace

Here, you will find the option of ‘Blog’. Select this option and you now have a blog page.

Blogging on Squarespace

Voila, job done, easy as that!

Next, you can change the title and settings of your blog page. Click on the setting icon next to the blog page. This will give you the option to select a page title, navigation title, and more.

You also have the opportunity to change the URL of the blog and set it as your homepage. All of this will give you more control over your blog and posts.

Once you’ve done this, you can go to your blog page by clicking the little arrow ‘>’

From this screen you can easily chop and change the layout of your blog page. You have options such as grid or stacked layouts, no. of posts to display, whether or not to display excepts, and much more.

2. Add A New Blog Post

The next thing is to write and share your creativity and blog posts with the world!

You can do this in just a few steps. From the blog page, click the ‘+’ sign to create a new post.

Setting up a blog on Squarespace

This will open up the Squarespace blog post editor – which is nice easy to use. Give your blog a title in the title bar and start writing in the content box below.

Squarespace post options

There are many other options to offer a bit of flair to your Squarespace blog, too. You can add images, videos, and whatnot. You can even add a location to your blog – this is perfect for the travel bloggers amongst us.

After writing the blog content, make sure you’ve exhausted the various settings that the blog post offers. For example:

  • Turn the comments on: The blog posts have the commenting feature turned on by default. So, leave it be if you want visitor interaction on your blog post.
  • Add tags: Tags are your ticket to the top ranks in searches. Make sure you use keywords in tags to get the best results. Also, the more, the merrier!
  • Add categories: If you want to attract visitors, don’t forget to organize your content into categories. Categories make it easier for people to find the content they like or want. Keep the number decent so it doesn’t look overly cluttered.

  • Edit your blog post: You can edit posts that you have published or those kept in drafts. To do that, click on the edit button next to the blog post you want to edit. Else, you can click on the title and then make any changes you want in the blog post.
  • Add a thumbnail image: Visuals make everything more interesting. That’s why it is so important to add a thumbnail image to your blog post. This image will show up in overviews and in the summary block. You can add a thumbnail image by clicking on edit and going to options. And, also spice up your main content with pictures as well.
  • Add an excerpt and change the URL: While you are in the Options tab, don’t forget to use the excerpt and URL features. You can add an excerpt that will show up in overviews and the summary block – with the thumbnail you uploaded earlier.
  • The excerpt should make the visitors want to click on the blog post and read. So, make sure you throw all the relevant and exciting details in the excerpt. Then comes the URL, which Squarespace automatically sets according to the title. If you want to shorten it, then you can type in the new URL in the bar. From now, this URL will show up no matter the title of your blog post.
  • Add authors: You can also show the authors of the blog post. If there is more than one, you can select all of them to show up.
  • Add a location: Adding a location to your blog post will give it that extra kick. You can choose to show your business location or link a location on which the blog post is about. It is all up to you – and the blog post.

Once you have played around with all the settings, look at the post from preview. This will give you a view of how the visitors will see your post. So, you can make changes and change the layout accordingly.

3. Schedule Your Post To Go Live Later

You can save your blog posts to publish at a later date. You can also schedule a time for the post to go live. This way can always have Squarespace automatically post at optimal times for your audience.

You can select a day and time from the calendar; the post will go live at this time. If you want to check when some post is scheduled, then go to the blog overview page. There you will see all your blog posts with their scheduled times.

Squarespace Blogging Tips for Beginners

So that’s your blog page up and running now. As a little bonus, here’s a few tips and recommendations so you can start off on the right foot in the world of blogging and content.

SEO Tips For Blogging With Squarespace

These SEO tips will make your Squarespace blog discoverable and top-ranking in searches.

  • Build your blog title using keywords
  • Use keywords in the headings
  • Use keywords in your text naturally, no stuffing!
  • Write short concise paragraphs that seek to quickly inform the reader
  • Shorten the URL and use keywords
  • Name the images in your blog posts
  • Target low competition keywords
  • Answer Google’s suggested questions for your keyword within the post

Introduce Your Blog And Yourself In The About Page

This page will let the readers know more about the face behind all the blog posts they like.

Or maybe you will convert your visitors into readers, maybe even buyers. The level of engagement your blog attracts could boil down to how you present yourself! It all depends on how exciting and appealing your “About” section is.

You can use this page to share your motivation behind the blog, your introduction, and a nice picture of yourself. Make sure the tone of this section matches that of the other content on your site.

If your blog is a professional one, then keep the tone professional. If it is more of a personal blog, please share some fun details about your life. But, don’t give it all away in the “About” section and leave some content for your posts as well.

Create A “Contact” Page

This is a great way to get in touch with your audience. You can answer your readers’ queries or form a deeper connection with them. This is also a great way for brands to reach out to you for partnerships and promotions.

Add Your Social Media Links

Social media can be a great way of connecting with people. If you link your social media accounts on your blog page, you’ll invite a lot more engagement on a personal level from your audience.

This is a great recipe for making deeper connections. The best place to display your social media handles is at the top of the site or on the sidebar.

To add your accounts to the blogging account, go to settings. Then click on Connected Accounts. Next, select the option to connect the account. You will need to login to each account.

Squarespace blogs social media

There you have it! Now all the social media icons on your site will be linked to your accounts. So, when people click on these social media handles, they will reach your accounts.

Make Your Blog Appealing

Choose A Topic To Blog About

You can’t decide everything at the start. Some things you decide as you move forward. But, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a general idea about your blog.

Decide on a broad topic that you want to write about. You can make your blog a food, travel, or beauty blog. Anything that interests you, really.

There are many other choices, and the blog doesn’t have to be in one category as well.

You can have different topics you can write about on your blog. But, making an outline of what you want to write about will come in handy later on.

My advice here would be to just blog about something you enjoy to avoid getting bored or burned out.

Give Your Blog A Name

This is the most important step. This will become the identity and branding of all the opinions and posts you share.

You will be known in the blogging space with this name. So, make sure it’s easier to spell and hard to forget. Of course, make sure that the domain name is not already taken.

Choose A Theme For Your Blog

Visuals play a significant role in making or breaking the user experience. So, make sure that you choose the fonts and colours that make your blog stand out.

Don’t use colours that don’t work together, have a scheme and stick to it. You definitely don’t want to be inconsistent when it comes to colours.

Carefully planned out content is easy to digest and creates a visual appeal for the readers. You should choose a theme for your blog and follow the same colour scheme on all of your pages.

Squarespace provides you with some amazing templates for your blog. Look through these templates and see if you find any that suits your style.

Alternatively, you can pick out a template that fits your needs and customise it to make it your own. It’s all up to your imagination.

You can even create your own logo with Squarespace’s logo builder. How cool is that?
