Online Part Time Jobs: 10 Ways To Earn In Your Own Time

So you’re looking for a bit of extra income on the side? Maybe you’re looking at online part time jobs to earn a little side hustle you can work on in your spare time and grow into a passive income?

I remember when I got to the point where I came home from work thinking that my salary just wasn’t cutting it anymore, the world is getting more expensive and my wages just don’t seem to be keeping up!

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably thinking there must be more opportunities to earn, especially in the age of the internet.

That’s when I started using my spare time searching relentlessly for online part time jobs and other ways to make money online, but all I seemed to come across were these fake gurus on YouTube ads trying to get me to sign up to webinars where they will no doubt try and sell me some extortionate online course on how to get rich overnight.

They don’t work!

I did, however, manage to learn about some decent side gigs where you control how much time and effort you put in.

On the flip side though there’s a definite correlation between what you put in and what you get out, meaning there’s no get rich quick schemes in my list but if you’re willing to treat it like a job, you can make some decent money that could even be scaled into a full time income to replace your job.

I have personally tried and tested some of these methods, more on my results a little later.

You’re probably thinking that it isn’t possible to make a decent amount of money online working part time without any skills or experience, as that’s generally how it works in the real world.

I’ve found that’s not entirely the case online though, some of the jobs in this list can definitely be done without qualifications or experience, you might just be more limited in your options.

If you’re serious about bettering yourself though and setting yourself up for the future, whether it’s a career change or just building on what you already know, I really recommend using a platform like Udemy to develop your skills or learn something new.

Doing this will give you infinitely more options when looking for online part time jobs!

Online learning platforms are great since they’re so widely available and cover almost any topic. Since the whole Covid-19 debacle, I’ve taken 5-10 courses on Udemy for topics ranging from Poker to SEO!

It feels good to learn something new and I’ve actually been able to apply some of those new found skills and make money with some of these methods as you’ll see later on.

For now let’s jump into the list, and find you your next money maker!

Teaching online is a fairly broad topic. Gone are the days where the word “teacher” is only associated with those mean adults that shouted at you every day in school (..or was that just me?).

In 2020 there’s more ways than ever to teach online, and a shed loads of different topics you can cover – almost anything infact!

Here are just some examples of what you could teach:

  • Fitness, weight loss, and dieting
  • Yoga
  • Programming
  • Marketing
  • Arts & Crafts
  • Baking
  • Design
  • Sales
  • Accounting
  • Life Coaching
  • Languages

If you have a skill, you can teach it online – The list really is endless!

Not only that, but with elearning platforms such as Udemy, Teachable, and Skillshare, it’s easier than ever to get into teaching. You don’t even need teachers qualifications!

  • It’s incredibly easy to get in to
  • Doesn’t require any investment other than time
  • You choose how much time per day you want to work on your course(s)
  • Potential to build a passive income

Teaching online can be lucrative. If you’re a likable person who’s knowledgeable and can present information well, there’s great opportunity to earn huge numbers.

One tutor on Udemy, Jose Portilla, is estimated to have earned up to $4.7m from 1 course alone!

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though! Below is a table of estimated earnings with different numbers of students enrolled, based on a $10 course fee (which is very low, but Udemy almost always has a sale on)

As you can see, nothing to shake a stick at!

For a start, on this one you’re going to need something that you’re able to teach. Like I said, you don’t need qualifications but you do need to have a wealth of knowledge on the subject – so it CAN just be a hobby that you’re very passionate about

You then need to plan out your course materials and resources. Most of the tutors in the courses I’ve taken just use screen recordings of slideshows with them narrating over the top. Very achievable, you don’t need to be a computer whiz to create a course!

You then need to sign up to become a tutor on an elearning platform. You may have a preference here, I can’t say I’ve taught on any of them, but I have taken courses on Udemy so I can recommend them, you can find out more here

A social media manager is someone that is paid to manage an individual’s or business’s social media profiles – believe it or not!

What that entails is things such as:

  • Planning social media marketing strategies
  • Building an online reputation
  • Developing brand awareness
  • Social engagements (responding to messages/reviews etc.)
  • Creating and publishing quality original content
  • Traffic generation with SEO
  • Create and manage social media ad campaigns
  • Develop relationships through social media platforms
  • Community expansion/outreach
  • Tracking and analyzing key metrics

A gig like this would be great for anyone that has a marketing background and knows the inner workings of at least one of the main social media platforms and has experience with social media marketing strategies and works with brands.

  • Great scalability, you can build a portfolio of brands you manage for and potentially even start your own agency
  • Usually not required to work set hours (with the aid of scheduling apps) – great for those looking for online part time jobs!
  • You can control how much work you put in by the size of the client you decide to work with
  • To certain people this will feel much more like a hobby than a job

If your passionate about anything social media, marketing, or branding – or perhaps social media marketing for brands – and are looking to learn something new, this could be a good way to make good money from your phone in your spare time!

Social Media Manager Earnings

The graph above shows that entry level SMM’s earn an average of $42,000 in the US, with the more experienced earning upwards of $60k!

Obviously these are full-time salary numbers but you can get an idea of what you’re able to charge and what you stand to make when taking on a smaller gig part time. You can see more here

If you don’t already have the skills to take on social media management but it sounds appealing to you, you’re going to want to start by learning the trade.

Again, this is made easier by elearning platforms but this will take some time and effort to learn and practice. Spending hours every day scrolling your Instagram feed just isn’t going to cut it for this one I’m afraid!

If you’re searching online for a social media managers job, you’ll probably find that most offerings are for full time positions.

Your best bet would be to advertise and sell your services through Fiverr – a platform that will enable you to sell any service you can offer – which you’ll see in more detail later.

For now, here’s how to get started with Fiverr and below are some of the services being offered by SMM’s on Fiverr (Bare in mind my prices are in Aussie $)

Becoming a virtual assistant is a great way of making money online part time, especially if you don’t have any particular skills or experience.

Virtual assistants are usually hired by busy small business owners or individuals that want to delegate some of the less important time consuming jobs so they can focus on the important factors that will grow their business/brand.

Virtual assistants provide support to these businesses/individuals by taking care of some of the more tedious tasks such as:

  • Take care of phone calls and emails
  • Manage contacts lists
  • Book flights, rentals, accommodation etc.
  • Schedule meetings
  • Create, manage, and keep track of records
  • Research
  • Organize calendars

You get the general idea, it varies by client and what they need you for, but in general it involves a lot of administrative tasks. As you can see, a great opportunity if you don’t have any particular skills!

Another great thing to note is the word virtual in the job title – virtual assistants generally work remotely meaning you can earn a side income online from anywhere in the world!

  • You don’t really need to be qualified
  • location independent – you can make money from anywhere in the world
  • mostly tasks that you can complete on your own schedule
  • Potential to scale and work for multiple clients/start an agency
  • Great ‘foot-in-the-door’ opportunity to become a bigger part of a small business

You can probably imagine, virtual assistants don’t make a killing in general, just due to the low level of labour intensity and the benefits.

It’s a great opportunity to make extra money online though as a bit of a side hustle alongside another job. According to Payscale, the average hourly wage for a virtual assistant in the US is $15.85

Virtual Assistant Pay

This can vary a lot based on client though, at the end of the day there’s an element of luck to it, a celebrity will pay you more than a small business owner

An aspiring virtual assistant should come up with a plan based on how much they want to earn and the services they are looking to offer. Once you know what you’re willing to commit to it you can start looking for positions.

One option would be to reach out to individuals and small business owners you know personally.

Another option would be to create your own website and market your own skills professionally if you’re looking to take it more seriously.

Personally I think FlexJobs is the best option here. FlexJobs is a job board catered to work from home opportunities. This includes freelance, remote, and part time roles. Perfect for someone looking to pick up a part time job online!

This is another topic that I’m going to leave fairly broad just because I don’t want to narrow it down to certain skills. The idea of freelancing is that you aren’t tied down to a contract or a single employer. You work your own hours and charge your own rates.

Freelancers usually hold particular skills that are in high demand all the time with people that need one off projects doing online quick, but either don’t have the time or skills to complete them.

These jobs are usually quick projects or assignments, so your time investment is completely up to you. Some of the most common freelance jobs are:

  • Writing
  • Creative Design
  • Web Design
  • Tutoring
  • Graphic Design
  • Mobile App Development
  • Translator
  • Marketing

When it comes to online part time jobs, freelancing is incredibly popular and always in demand!

  • Be your own boss – work as much or as little as you like
  • Set your own rates
  • You decide the work you want to take on
  • Generally can be completed from anywhere

There’s really no fancy income graphs or charts I can show you for this one! It completely depends on the service you’re offering and how much your skills are worth.

I would suggest checking out Fiverr and having a look at the going rates for other peoples listing within your category.

Instead, here’s a nice photo of someone working from their laptop. That’s a good thing to post in these kinds of articles isn’t it?.. Isn’t it?

Getting started in this one is pretty simple if you know what you’re going to offer. Simply go to a site such as Fiverr or Upwork, check out the listings of others offering the same service and create your own listing to start attracting clients.

Alternatively, you could check out what jobs are being offered on FlexJobs and apply there if anything tickles your fancy.

I will say that I have tried various methods or affiliate marketing myself, and I know it can be a good way to make money online in your spare time.

The difference here is you’re not necessarily going to be employed to do this so what you put in determines what you’ll get out of it. Think of these gigs more as a little side income project than online part time jobs.

There’s different methods of Affiliate Marketing but the general idea is that you’re going to be marketing other peoples products and you’ll earn a commission when someone makes a purchase through you – usually by clicking your affiliate link.

Before you lose interest, you don’t need to be a sales whiz to get into affiliate marketing, despite what you might think there’s methods of affiliate marketing that mean you just send them directly to the products sales page and they from there it’s the sellers job to convert.

Trust me I couldn’t think of anything worse than being a salesman, I just don’t have it in me!

  • There’s methods of affiliate marketing for all ability levels
  • You control how much time and effort you dedicate to it
  • Earnings can be highly lucrative and potential to scale
  • Good passive income project in your spare time

This one will depend completely on the effort you put in and the affiliate offers you go after and how you market them.

Some methods such as blogging or creating any other website where you build an online presence will take time and a lot of effort in the beginning to build a loyal and trusting following that will eventually shop with you and your affiliate offers.

There’s potential for good income, but it’s definitely a long ball game.

On the other hand there’s some methods that are more short term quick profits, but there’s always the possibility of hitting a gold mine when one of the offers sells like hot cakes.

This is the method that I used, and it involves creating some form of a landing page (it doesn’t need to be an established website) and driving paid traffic to it.

There’s a bit more to it, but that’s way too much to cover in this article. Below you can see some of my own earnings, you can see there’s potentially good money to be made!

Clickbank Earnings

Potentially much more lucrative than other online part time jobs!

I’ll disclose though that to achieve this I used certain offers paid with what I believe is a largely untapped and highly targeted traffic source.

I won’t go into that hear but I’ll be writing about it soon, and I haven’t seen it covered elsewhere so be sure to subscribe to my newsletter to be notified when that goes live!

I consent to the terms and conditions

As mentioned above it depends on the method you want to take.

If you already have a blog or a website you can start looking at affiliate partnerships with services and products you already use, it’s always good to recommend things you actually like yourself. It’s also great to start building relationships with brands.

For the method I used you just need to create landing pages for the offers, you can check out a service such as Clickfunnels which makes building landing pages easy for anyone, no web design or coding experience necessary!

You’ll then want to find offers, usually in the footer of a website selling a product you’ll be able to find an Affiliates page. You may have to apply but that will give you your link and the tools you’ll need to start selling.

An easier way would be to sign up to a platform like Clickbank which is a library of affiliate offers that you can advertise instantly, you’ll also find all the affiliate tools you need easily.

Clickbank also handles all of the payments and is the service that I use personally.

This is a fun one, and very easy and unique, you don’t need any kind of skills at all but I’m sure you’ll have enough experience shopping to fit the bill.

Companies will pay secret shoppers to do nothing more than shop with them! It really is that easy!

But why would they pay you to do that?!

Well, it’s a market research technique that usually larger companies use to evaluate the performance of staff and their services. It’s basically getting a customer eyes view of what it’s like to shop with them.

Clearly, you can see why this is important to big brands.

For that reason though you will have to keep receipts, answer surveys and give feedback to the provider. That’s about all there is to it though.

Some industries that use mystery shoppers are:

  • Salons – now you’re listening girls!
  • Restaurants
  • Makeup counters – still got your attention!
  • Supermarkets
  • Electronic shops
  • Car dealerships

Mystery Shopping Offers

All sorts! If it isn’t already enticing enough, you even get to keep what you purchased – and got reimbursed for!

  • Not so much online part time jobs – these are barely work!
  • You choose the offers that you want to do
  • Do as much or as little as you want
  • Doesn’t demand any real difference in lifestyle

It’s not something I’ve tried personally but I read a story about Michelle from Making Sense of Cents who earned $100’s a month mystery shopping and had a great time doing it, with some freebies and bonuses thrown in on top!

If you’re interested you can find out more about mystery shopping

You don’t really need much in the way of skills or experience to get started doing mystery shopping.

You do need to be aware of scams though and can go here to learn more about mystery shopping scams

Again this isn’t something I’ve tried so I can only recommend heading over to Michelle’s blog to see her recommendations on mystery shopping platforms

This one’s pretty self explanatory I think. App developers and companies will pay you to test their apps/websites and give feedback based on your experience.

They want to ensure they’re providing a stress free and pleasant experience, all you’ll usually be asked to do is record your screen and microphone so you can give feedback during your experience.

This is known as ‘user testing’ and doesn’t require any prior experience, just use the site/app as you usually would and tell them about your experience.

On the other end of the scale there will be ‘bug testers’ who are paid to purposely try and break the site or find critical flaws that make it a bad user experience so that the more important technical issues can be ironed out before it’s released.

These can make great online part time jobs for anyone, especially those into their tech.

  • It’s not really much work
  • Requires very little in the way of equipment, just a computer or phone (depending on what you’re testing) and an internet connection will usually do the trick
  • No experience or skills required

Unfortunately this one’s not such a lucrative gig. The main reason for this is that a lot of the sites that will pay you to do this are saturated with more testers than clients.

It’s impossible really to know how many offers you’ll qualify for and be offered, but I’d recommend joining as many sites as you can find that offer this to increase your chances.

One popular platform, Usertesting, pay $10 per gig and you can expect to do maybe 1 or 2 per week.

Like I said there’s not much in the way of skills or experience necessary, and you’ll most likely already have everything you need to get started so jump on over to Usertesting and submit your application!

If you’re anything like me you probably palmed off dropshipping pretty quickly when every other YouTube ad was someone telling you how dropshipping is dead.

Well as it turns out that was a mistake. When I found myself with more free time I decided to look into it a bit more, I always knew of the idea but assumed I had missed the boat and it was something that I missed out on.

Only, that isn’t really how dropshipping works.

The concept of dropshipping has been around for decades and it’s one that just works. The idea is that you’re basically setting up nothing more than a shopfront and using it to market and sell products at a marked up price.

These products will usually be sourced from wholesalers like AliExpress or Alibaba where prices are cheap for unbranded products.

What makes it a great business model is that it doesn’t require you, the store owner, to hold any stock at any point. You simply order from the supplier after your customer has ordered and paid you. You then have the product delivered straight to the customer.

This means there’s no need for expensive warehouse space and you don’t need a lot to invest upfront buying stock, this is a huge weight off a business owners shoulders.

Couple this with the fact that ecommerce is booming and growing year on year, a business model like this will likely never die out.

Dropshipping Model

So why do people keep saying it’s dead?!

Because they tried it and it didn’t work for them. The fact is, so many people were promised insane get rich quick results from gurus that they just didn’t expect they’d have to put the work in to see results.

Now they just complain that it’s too saturated, and therefore dead.

It’s true that a lot of people are doing it and it’s much harder to be successful but it’s definitely possible with the right attitude and perseverance.

This is another one of those side projects and not really a job kind of gigs. It’ll take time to build your store and find products that are going to sell. For that reason, you very much need to take a trial and error approach.

That being said it can be fun owning your own store and a nice little side income project that you can grow into potentially even a brand over time if you do it right.

It’s no secret that this is a great method to make money online

  • Build your own business
  • Nice low investment project that has big potential
  • Possibility to scale into a brand
  • Can become a large semi-passive income

How much you can earn depends on a lot of factors. Firstly, and probably the biggest factor, is your own investment.

The higher the budget you have for marketing and testing products, the quicker you’re going to find stuff that sells and get it in front of potential customers.

Secondly, the quality of your creatives will make a big difference to your conversion rates.

Simply put, there’s too many variables to put a hard figure on how much you can make from dropshipping. For example though I tried dropshipping a few months ago and managed to make $150 USD in my first weekend.

Clearly then it has good potential for an online income.

Do dropshipping right though, and you definitely won’t be looking for any more online part time jobs!

To start, I highly recommend learning from as many resources as possible. For instance there’s a lot of free content on YouTube that can get you started building your first store and run some basic ads to attract customers.

However, no one would ever just give away their winning formula when it comes to dropshipping – there’s just too much competition.

Importantly, though by consuming that content you’ll be able to avoid beginner mistakes that would otherwise just have you wasting money.

When it comes to setting up your store the only place I recommend trying is Shopify. You don’t need to have any kind of web design or coding skill, just choose a theme and off you go.

You’ll then need to go to a wholesaler such as AliExpress to source your products and suppliers.

In time I’ll be releasing my own guide to building a Shopify store, which is a monster topic in itself, so if you’re interested keep an eye out for that!

Microworking could be a great option for someone looking for online part time jobs. Generally, microjobs are small tasks that have been broken down from large projects and distributed among many workers over the internet.

Most of these are large volume tasks that have no reliable or efficient automated solution to complete. For this reason, human judgement is required and these small tasks are distributed among high volumes of people online.

Some examples of microjobs are:

  • Labeling photographs
  • Describing products
  • Transcribing audio
  • Checking data
  • Searching for information

In reality, any small task at all can be a microjob, meaning there’s something for all skill levels.

  • Lot’s of opportunities regardless of skill level or experience
  • You can get paid to do pretty much anything
  • No real commitments, complete small stress free tasks and get paid, simple

Due to the nature of the work and the tasks involved, this just isn’t going to be a viable option for most looking for online part time jobs.

Clickworker‘s FAQ’s states an average hourly wage of $9 can be achieved. Not sure how accurate that really is though or how much work you can expect to be given.

However, if you’re just looking for anything easy to pass the time this might be an option, otherwise I’d avoid.

Amazon’s Mechanical Turk seems the most known and reliable option. Get started here.

Basically, transcribing is just the act of manually converting something written to something spoken, or vice versa. Sounds simple?

It is, there’s not much more to in than that. Transcription jobs can easily be found online through most of the platforms listed in this article.

Literally get paid to type out audio recordings!

  • Flexible, no commitments, work as much or as little as you like. Perfect for anyone looking to work from home part time
  • No experience or skills required
  • Doesn’t require investment

TranscribeMe! claims to have the industry’s best starting at $15-$22 per audio hour and top monthly earnings at $2,200 (average monthly earnings are $250).

Not bad considering the work you’d be doing! This seems like a realistic and achievable number for online part time jobs too.

TranscribeMe! Seems the most popular option for giving this a try, simply sign up by clicking the link above!

Whether you’re looking to build up a side hustle or just make some easy extra cash in your spare hours, this list has options for online part time jobs for everone.

I’m only able to vouch for a few of these methods personally but some others look promising and if you look hard enough you’re sure to find success stories for almost all of them.

Be sure to let me know in the comments below if you’ve tried any of these before – I’d love to hear your experience!

I’m also open to suggestions if you’d like to see me try out any methods before investing your own time or money. I’ll likely give some of these more of a try and write up about what I find!

For now, I hope you found some useful information here and if this article helped you in any way I’d appreciate if you’d share this article by clicking the image below to pin! Thanks for reading!
