If anything’s for sure today in the world of internet marketing, it’s that it’s become accessible to almost anybody in recent years. Fresh and intuitive new tools and platforms are popping up everywhere, making it a breeze to get involved.

Squarespace: How Does It Square Up?

When it comes to content management systems though, the big names have stood the test of time. The likes of WordPress, Wix, and Weebly are renowned and respected giants in this game.

So why would you jump off the bandwagon? Is there good reason to start afresh? Is Squarespace worth it?

With regards to website builders, one thing’s for certain, being tech-savvy and having extensive knowledge of coding is no longer a pre-requisite. In this day and age, it’s merely an excuse.

That being said, just because a tool can do the job, doesn’t mean to say there isn’t a better option out there. We’ve really been spoilt over the years in the world of building internet properties.

Whether you’re building a hobbyist blog, creating a website for your small business, sharing your photography portfolio, or creating landing pages to dabble in affiliate marketing, website builders will have you up and running in no time.

So how does Squarespace square up? (haha, see what I did there??)

Let’s find out in my Squarespace review.

What is Squarespace?

Make no mistake, Squarespace is no new kid on the block. In fact, Squarespace was founded in 2003 as a blog hosting website service and CMS.

Is squarespace worth it?

Founder, Anthony Casalena, was a student at the time. He borrowed $30,000 from his dad to get the company off the ground from his college dorm room. Pretty cool story really!

It’s grown rapidly in the last 5 years or so to become a market front runner as a website building solution. The main aspect that I believe made Squarespace a prominent name is its easy-to-use features. It is targeted towards those who have almost zero knowledge of coding.

It is mostly used by those creative artists that want to have their online presence with a well-built, interactive, and just generally pretty website.

Platforms such as Squarespace allow you to add various features, including custom domain names, checkout tools for e-commerce websites, and SSL certificate protection easily, without needing any of the tech knowledge.

Perfect for those looking to build a plug-and-play website straight out of the box.

Is Squarespace Good For Beginners and Easy To Use?

Given that Squarespace is geared towards those without experience, it’s fair to say that Squarespace strikes a good balance between being simplistic in its setup while still allowing you to create unique, sophisticated websites.

It’s what you come to expect, or hope for at least! In this day and age, a site builder or CMS that isn’t easy to use just isn’t going to cut it.

Having said that, builders trying to push the edge of the envelope too far quickly become clunky and overwhelming.

Squarespace does a good job of avoiding that with it’s minimalist layout.

By nature, it’s pretty simple to understand. All you need is time and patience. The process of creating a website is pretty simple:

1. Create an account with Squarespace.

2. Choose a template that will suit your business.

3. Start editing to your heart’s content.

With Squarespace, you’ll be set up in no time by choosing one of the preset templates. From there, you’re able to use the block editor to customize the design.

It’s no frills, but it’s minimalist, simple, and easy to use if you’re looking to throw up a well-designed, professional looking website quickly.

Features of Squarespace

While maintaining simplicity, Squarespace provides you with an array of features and designs to pick from. This makes the website building process even more fun and creative.

You will come across features that are specially designated for e-commerce websites, for blogging, and business websites.

Squarespace makes it easy to access the tools that you need, without having to deal with the bloat of the ones you don’t.

Squarespace features are divided into various categories based on your objectives. First, you will have to make use of the building features to build and design a website.

From here, you’ll be offered features based on your desired result. For example, you can make e-commerce sites more conversion optimised and user-friendly with e-commerce features. In addition, marketing tools and solutions are available to the users, which will help with the business’s branding and reputation.

Some of the popular features include:

  • Modern award-winning website-designing templates
  • Drag and drop design and template management
  • Style editor and image loader and image scaling features
  • Mobile website templates
  • E-commerce tools and solutions
  • Direct editing features
  • Gallery box
  • Appointment tools
  • Custom CSS
  • File synchronization from Dropbox
  • Social media integration
  • Analytics and reporting tools
  • SEO tools and solutions
  • WYSIWIG editor
  • Audio templates
  • Registration for a domain name
  • Email marketing by Mailchimp

How does Squarespace work?

Build your site with Squarespace

Squarespace website building and design features revolve around a minimalist and simple style, which is ideal for anyone looking to build a simple, clean looking site with ease.

Templates are the skeletal structure that creates the base for the web design. That is why you will come across almost 110 templates of various designs and styles to choose from.

My outlook on these templates is that they are classy and appealing, they look unique and professional.

The problem with templates on website builders is that you often get the impression that something is duplicated, low effort, and therefore low quality.

Squarespace, on the other hand, leaves you with a clean, upper class finish that doesn’t look like you’ve seen it a million times before.

Squarespace also has no shortage of typefaces and fonts as compared to other website builders. Google provides around 1000 fonts, and Adobe provides approximately 600 fonts to choose from.

You can also edit and stylize your template for a better appearance. You can add your CSS code and rule to the templates to add or remove something. However, this feature is only applicable to higher-cost plans or business plans.

Unsplash integration

Perk up the classy feel of these templates with some great looking pictures, and voila! You have a professional website in a few clicks.

Another great feature, in my opinion, is the availability of Unsplash’s library of royalty-free images. Choose any topic, get the images, and add them to the template. You can also add pictures from Getty images with an added cost.

This is a great timesaver and an impressive addition to the platform.

Video backgrounds and logos for business

Another interesting feature is the video backgrounds that you can add to the website. I found it quick and easy to add a video to the background and even edit it to my liking. All you need is the URL of the video from Vimeo or YouTube.

Another outstanding feature that Squarespace provides is the logo designing feature. If you want to create a logo for your business, the logo-designing app will come in handy. Drag and drop the elements, and create a business logo of your choice.

To be fair, it isn’t the most intuitive and you’d likely end up creating one elsewhere for the long term. However, it is a good feature to include and something you don’t see much.

Mobile website building

One of the major features that every website builder should have is mobile website optimized templates.

Squarespace doesn’t disappoint here. Every template you choose will be equally responsive on mobile devices as they are on larger screen devices. Squarespace offers its users AMP support, fairly standard these days.

To speed up the loading time and reduce the bounce rate on mobile sites, you can switch on the “accelerate mobile pages” feature. It will quicken the loading time and will also help in SEO for Google search results. One thing to keep in mind is that it is applicable only for blog posts

Manage your content

The content management part of Squarespace is another intuitive feature. It is quite easy to use the features that make website building fun.

Squarespace apps

Squarespace features 3 mobile apps to manage your content on the go, these being:

  • Commerce – for managing your online store
  • Analytics – to track your site data
  • Squarespace – allows you to manage blog content on the go, including text and images.

A very impressive and intuitive addition, in my opinion that works seamlessly.

You can easily drag and drop content from various blocks. In my opinion, Squarespace provides the best interface to work with, regardless of what type of content you are using.

You can add content sections, which makes managing the content very easy and hassle-free.

For the bloggers out there, Squarespace brings better styling features. Create separate blogs or additional categories of blogs – the choice is yours. Add summary blocks, schedule blog publishing, add share buttons or use tags on blogs with complete ease.

Integrate social media on Squarespace

It has to be said, one area where Squarespace is lacking, or at least a bit different from the competition, is integrations.

It depends how you look at it, they’ve very much taken a ‘quality of quantity’ approach when it comes to integrations.

Instead of giving you a plethora of options to make your own choice, they offer you what is, in their opinion, best.

It’s not the end of the world, but people do have their preferences, so they won’t be pleasing everyone here.

  • Extensions

Squarespace does offer some paid extensions which can be helpful depending on your needs. There are around 20 add-on extensions to choose from QuickBooks, Xero, etc.

  • Plug-ins

Just like WordPress plug-ins, Squarespace has added plug-in options. You can add these code snippets to enhance the features of the website and increase its overall functionality.

Build an e-commerce website using Squarespace

You can also easily rely on Squarespace for those who are planning to build a site for an online store or e-commerce project. I believe it is easily a perfect pick for those who want many features and tools for making a responsive and useful e-commerce site.

Some of the most common features include:

  •  Unlimited support for products: Add as many products as possible.
  • Add product variants: Using product variant features, you can add variants to products on the site.
  • Sell digital products: Do you have eBooks, software, and music to sell? Squarespace is there to help.
  • Manage the inventory: Product management becomes easy and quick since you can handle the products’ inventory to be sold.
  •   Tax configuration: Squarespace also has sales tax features to configure the taxes for various countries and places.

Use marketing tools and improve SEO on Squarespace.

Squarespace is built so that you can design your website and enhance the marketing and SEO of the website to bring in more traffic.

I believe one of the best things about Squarespace for marketing is the back-end built-in SEO strategies.

All the web pages you will create will have SEO optimized designs, the back-end does a good job of taking care of this, giving you one less thing to think about.

Squarespace focuses on a cleaner HTML, mobile optimization, responsive websites, cleaner markup, option to add keywords in places, manage titles of the blogs, provide SSL certificate, etc. From an SEO perspective, these things will help make the site more user friendly, in turn keeping Google happy.

If you want email marketing, then Squarespace is there to help you. There is an email marketing feature to help you nurture leads and enhance email campaigns. It allows marketing to be completed through the integrated Mailchimp application.

Squarespace integration

There is an additional cost for email campaigns that need to be bought based on the chosen plan: starter, core, pro, and max plans.

Squarespace Pricing

Now we’re hitting the money questions aren’t we! So how much does Squarespace cost and is Squarespace worth it?

In my opinion, for what you’re getting, the cost of Squarespace is very fair and more than justified. Below is the Squarespace pricing structure

$12/mo paid yearly$18/mo paid yearly$26/mo paid yearly$40/mo paid yearly
$16 monthly$26 monthly$30 monthly$46 monthly
Squarespace pricing

Squarespace will set you back no more than Weebly, or Webflow, with all three of them coming in at $144USD/yr.

Squarespace doesn’t offer any free plans, but they do have a free 2-week trial. Plenty of time to give it a whirl and see if it’s a fit for your needs.

Also, one of the things that makes Squarespace a great choice is transparency in billing and charges. You can cancel easily, no games from the customer support team, which is a breath of fresh air.

What makes Squarespace better than its competitors?

Choosing between the goliaths in this industry can be tough, especially when most of them are excellent in what they provide.

Squarespace, in my opinion, is one of the best site builders and proves a worthy competitor for the big guns. There are some things that other builders are good at, but there are many features in which Squarespace is a sure-shot winner.

Let’s see how Squarespace fairs better among the other choices in the market.

Design and templates

One of the best advantages that Squarespace has over others is the choice of themes and templates they have. They are fashionable, slick, and perfect for those who want their site to look creative and new-age. Themes can be easily customized and tweaked, which is not that easy when using WordPress or Wix.

Easy to use

Squarespace somehow manages to strike a great balance being feature-rich while maintaining its lightweight, minimal feel. It’s intuitive, responsive, and incredibly simple.

WYSIWYG editor

Use the WYSIWYG editor to see what you’re building In real time. No more updating and refreshing to see results.

I’m personally not a fan of these editors, but I know they’re popular among many.

E-commerce features

Squarespace is the top of its class when it comes to providing the necessary and extra tools to make your e-commerce site user friendly and creative.

Like WordPress, there is no need to add extra plug-ins. Squarespace comes with added plans, so all you need to do is find a template and start working on it. You can also get some perfect features like coupon generation, zero transaction fees, image zooming, abandoned cart recovery, etc.

Better SEO

You can easily use the tools provided by Squarespace to improve the website’s SEO. You can add Google analytics or use Squarespace analytics for the website. It will also help add Meta tags and alt tags and even help create an XML sitemap for the website.

Is Squarespace worth it? The Final Verdict

If you want an eye-catching website that’s easily thrown together in a classy, intuitive manner, while maintaining a professional and minimalist feel, Squarespace is going to be right up your alley.

I believe Squarespace has everything that you’ll need to build a great website from scratch. You can use any template from various professional-grade options, without any coding knowledge required.

Yes, to some people the minimalist style won’t be what they’re after. It lacks some options and variety when it comes to integrations and other features, which to some may make it seem a bit basic if anything.

With that said, if you’re just starting out, I don’t really see how you can go wrong with Squarespace.

It has everything you need and more, the platform is very forgiving for beginners, and at this price point, it’s a great option for a first foray into website building.

Overall, I can only highly recommend Squarespace, and with a two week trial on offer, what’ve you got to lose?
