Extra Income Ideas - Make Money From Hobby

Extra Income Ideas: How To Make Money From Your Hobby

BUILDING MULTIPLE STREAMS OF INCOME

Let’s be honest, how many of us are guilty of leaving work and not giving another thought to making money. The going is rough for many at the moment and peoples wages just aren’t going far enough. It’s more important than ever to start considering extra income ideas.

I’ll hold my hands up – I spend far too much time outside of work indulging in my hobbies and favourite pastimes.

With work finished for the day, the last thing I want to be doing is thinking about more work. After all, work hard play harder, right?

The problem I found with this is that it’s for this very reason that I give absolutely no consideration to building extra income outside of work and building more streams of income.

What I’ve come to realize is that in the age of the internet and how it’s evolved, there’s more ways to make money than ever, and some of them you’d think you could only dream of being paid for!

That’s why I created Dan’s Pursuit, to document my findings and my journey towards building more income streams, and eventually generate passive income.

It’s hard to differentiate between the real online money making opportunities and the many scams that surround them these days. It’s my aim to find what’s working and give you reliable and useful information to help you on your own journey’s.

That said, what if I told you that you’re able to earn a side income from those hobbies that you indulge in to forget about work?

HOW CAN I MONETIZE A HOBBY?

There’s 3 main methods for making money from your hobby. With technology ever advancing, these are also now accessible even more easily online.

These 3 main methods are:

  • Selling your hobby as a service
  • Creating and selling products associated to your hobby
  • Teaching what you know about your hobby to others

Selling As A Service

As mentioned earlier, this method makes for great extra income ideas online. With online platforms such as Fiverr, it’s incredibly easy to start using your hobbies to create services and make money online.

If your hobby is also considered a skill that’s in demand, you’ll easily be able to make money online from that. You’ll see some great examples of these hobbies later on.

Earning extra income from your hobby can be as simple as signing up and creating a listing. This listing will act as the ad for your service and allow buyers to find and purchase your services.

Creating and Selling Products

Whether your hobby is arts and crafts or graphic design, there’s great tools you can use to create products you can sell.

For example, Etsy is a marketplace that enables people to advertise and sell their home creations. It’s a great platform to make money from your crafts and artistic talents that you already enjoy doing!

Etsy

Similarly, those into design will find great extra income ideas and opportunities with POD services.

POD stands for Print-on-Demand and means exactly what you think it does! With these services, you can create your designs and have them printed on almost anything, from mugs to hats, Tshirts to keyrings, to probably even tin openers!

Products you’ve created with your designs can then be printed and sold as customers order them! In turn, this means you never have to own any stock! Great for someone looking to start a dropshipping business with low investment.

You can also see dropshipping covered in my list of online part time jobs

To look more into POD services, Printful is the most widely known.

Teaching

With the introduction of elearning platforms such as Udemy, it’s easier than ever to teach online.

What’s more, you don’t even need qualifications to teach and sell courses on Udemy. This makes it a great option for someone who has a hobby they’re incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about.

Provided that you’re a likable tutor and you’re able to convey information efficiently and create attractive courses, you can easily use these platforms to make extra money online!

If you’re not so computer savvy, you may be more interested in offering small group coaching or mentoring in your local community.

The opportunities for making money online with these extra income ideas are endless!

WHICH HOBBIES CAN I MAKE MONEY FROM?

Before jumping into it, note that this isn’t an exhaustive list. This list is just a curation of some of what I think are the most profitable and easy to monetize. By subscribing to my newsletter, you can get instant access to a more comprehensive list of money making ideas including a free money making checklist!

I consent to the terms and conditions

1) Writing

Without a doubt, writing is one of the most profitable hobbies you can use to earn a side income.

Of course, there’s always been to opportunity to write books and poems and children’s stories etc. However, with the internet came blogging, ebooks, more media outlets and in general a world more content.

Writing

The most popular way to start earning extra income through writing would be to start doing freelance work.

Freelancing enables others to hire you for short term tasks such as writing them an article for their blog, or writing a biography or homework paper.

Freelancing can be very lucrative if you can dedicate enough time to it, you’re earnings also increase as you become a more skilled writer! You can find freelancing work by either creating a listing yourself on Fiverr or Upwork.

Creating a blog would be another great way to monetize your writing hobby!

2) Photography

If photography is where you get your kicks, you should know that there’s great potential for making money online with that too!

The most profitable way to make money from photography would be to create your own website and market your photography through that. This way you’re free to set your own prices and nobody takes a cut.

Your own website gives you the freedom to set your own terms and control how you showcase your portfolio. You’re also given the most efficient way to market yourself and your skills.

Photography

Another option would be to sell photo’s to stock image platforms such as Shutterstock, who claim to have made their sellers over $500 million in total!

When selling photo’s with these stock image platforms you can expect to make 20-30% of whatever the images sell for in commissions.

In addition, locally, you can make yourself available to hire as a part time photographer for weddings and birthdays, or work for a modelling agency!

3) Gaming

Let’s not lie, most of us can’t resist a bit of gaming time after a stressful day at work. How can you make money from that though?

Gaming

Gaming has some unique options when it comes to extra income ideas and generating extra streams of income.

For example, you can stream through popular platforms such as Twitch. Twitch allows you to build a following who’re able to subscribe to you for additional benefits at a small price.

Additionally, you’re able to generate income from ad revenue on Twitch!

Similarly, you can build a following by posting gaming videos on Youtube where you’ll also be able to generate ad revenue.

Not only can these platforms alone be incredibly lucrative, you’re able to build yourself into a brand and start selling merchandise and other income streams.

If you’re looking for an alternative, look into creating a course to teach your skills to new players. You could even take students on as a mentor.

4) Graphics

It has to be said, I was always awful at art in school. Shambolic, in fact. I think I’ll put it down to being left handed, though.

I have, though, dabbled a little bit in digital graphics using various software (which I’m not so awful at) and can see why it’s such a profitable hobby.

Graphic Design

First and foremost, it’s worth mentioning that graphic design can be a perfectly viable full time career path for those who are that passionate about it.

That being said, there’s still plenty of opportunities to earn a side income through it as a hobby.

In similar fashion to writing, freelancing would be among the best opportunities to earn extra money when it comes to graphics. Again, there’s plenty of buyers on Fiverr looking to have various logos and images designed.

If you don’t want to advertise your services yourself you may find a site like FlexJobs useful. They have job listings geared towards freelancers and part time workers that want to work remotely. Great for making money from home!

Another option would be creating and selling tutorials and courses for popular software packages.

I’m sure you well know, creative software suites can be overwhelming at first and almost everyone will look for tutorials or training meaning there’s great earning potential just from selling what you know about your hobby!

As mentioned earlier in the article, graphic design would work well with a Print-on-Demand business!

5) Music

Could you imagine a world without music? One thing I couldn’t imagine is a world with no demand for music and musicians.

Your passion for music can be monetized in a number of different ways, and they make for great extra income ideas!

Music

Whether you’re a DJ, a guitarist or a songwriter, you’re able to turn those skills into a side hustle!

The most popular method for musicians other than playing live in your spare time or selling your own records would be to teach your skills either locally or online. You can take on students locally or create a course online, or both!

DJ’s and bands will always be in high demand for weddings and birthdays too.

If you’re a more popular artist you may be able to monetize through streaming platforms such as Spotify, which would be a great way to generate a passive income!

An alternative option would be to sell your creations online to stock music platforms such as stockmusic.net

6) Video Editing

The demand for video editors is only going to keep rising with the increased usage of video media online with social networks and advertising.

Video Editing

Monetizing your passion for video editing is largely the same as graphic design so I’m not going to spend too much time repeating myself here.

Once again you will find an abundance of opportunities to make money online freelancing. Potentially even more so with graphic design, due to how video creatives continue to grow.

You’ll also find a world of opportunity within film & TV, or maybe even editing for YouTubers in your spare time.

7) Crafts & DIY

If you’re the creative type that likes to get hands on and practical, there’s some great money making ideas here.

Crafts

From knitting to woodwork, there’s buyers for anything that you can make. You can sell your creations locally between friends and family and your local community marketplaces.

From there if you have the passion and the drive you can scale up and start selling on a marketplace online such as Etsy.

If you’re serious enough, this would be perfect for starting your own business and creating a substantial second income.

Additionally these are practical skills that can come in handy in everyday life. Therefore, there’ll always be a market for you to teach these skills both within local communities and online!

8) Fitness

Health & Fitness is one of the biggest and most profitable niches around at the moment. Any aspect of health, fitness, dieting or well-being that you have a passion for has some great prospects for extra income ideas.

Fitness

The most common method to making a profit from your hobby here would be to offer custom tailored workouts and meal plans, and personal training services.

A more challenging method would be to become some kind of social media influencer. Obviously, you’d be playing the long game here and it would take time to build a following you can effectively monetize.

It is, however, incredibly lucrative when successful!

You may choose to create a blog around this topic. This would be a good way to share your knowledge and turn it into another source of income.

9) Social Media

Admit it, you’re guilty of spending too much time scrolling through your social media profiles. We all do it, sadly it’s become like human instinct to throw ourselves on the sofa and pull out our phones.

But can you make money from social media?

Social Media

There’s one asset all social media platforms have that makes them incredibly valuable and profitable.

Traffic.

People spend more time browsing social media than they do anything else on the internet.

This is important because traffic is expensive and businesses will pay big money to get their products/services in front of peoples eyes.

The first way to make money from social media would be to become a social media manager in your spare time. This could be for individuals or small businesses.

As a social media manager you’ll take care of the social media marketing campaigns/strategies for those clients. You’ll also be in charge of communities and social media interactions.

Once again you can offer these services through a platform like Fiverr. Be aware though, that businesses will want someone with relevant skills and experience and this is a full time career to some.

If it’s something you’d like to take up in your spare time it might be worth taking an online course and learning more about it.

As mentioned earlier, another method is to become a social media influencer. You’d earn money by effectively selling your audience. Businesses and individuals would happily pay to get their ads in front of your audience.

This is incredibly hard to achieve though and an unrealistic target for most.

10) Baking

Baking

There’s some great extra income ideas and opportunities for those with an interest in baking.

Of course, there’s the old fashioned way of bake sales or starting your own small business from home. I have friends and family that have done this recently and their sweet treats sell like hot cakes!

You also have the unique option of creating recipe books or a blog where you sell recipes. You could also use this to create cooking courses and such.

Maybe you’d like to start a small cooking school and teach students locally. Baking and cooking are necessary life skills for most of us and there’ll always be an audience for that reason.

The opportunities are endless!

WHAT IF NONE OF MY HOBBIES APPEAR ON THIS LIST?

As mentioned towards the beginning of the article, this isn’t an exhaustive list of opporunities.

What I hope I’ve shown you here is the various ways a hobby can be made profitable. There’s many completely different topics covered in this list and they can still largely be monetized using the same methods, just with different applications.

The main takeaway here is that regardless of your hobby there’ll be creative ways to make it profitable.

Let’s revisit the 3 main methods:

  • Sell as a service
  • Create and sell products
  • Teach your skill

There’s an audience looking to learn just about every topic under the sun, meaning teaching is always an option regardless of the topic.

Another option that would be viable for any topic would be to start a blog. I’m not going to cover it here in detail but there’s many ways to monetize a blog, and an audience of people that share any hobby.

WRAPPING UP

To conclude you should look at these methods of monetizing a hobby and think how you could apply that to your own.
